The Sydney to Brisbane Drive: Why Rollands Plains Is Worth the Stop

The drive between Sydney and Brisbane covers roughly 900 kilometres. Most people try to do it in a single day or push through with a quick overnight on the Pacific Highway. The mid north coast is one of the most overlooked stretches of Australian highway, and Rollands Plains is one of the reasons to change that habit.

Where Rollands Plains Sits

Rollands Plains is about two hours inland from Port Macquarie on the Oxley Highway. If you're travelling Sydney to Brisbane, Port Macquarie is roughly the halfway point. The town itself is small. The surrounding valley is why you come.

Amani Farm sits on 130 acres in that valley. The cottage has views across to the ridge line. At night there is almost no light pollution. On a clear night you can see the Milky Way.

Why a Night Here Specifically

The Pacific Highway is efficient. It is also relentless. Hours of dual carriageway, service station food, and towns that feel like they've been designed to be passed through quickly.

A night at Rollands Plains puts you off the highway completely. The Oxley Highway east of Walcha is a different kind of driving — winding, well-maintained, with views that open up suddenly as the road climbs. By the time you reach the valley, you've slowed down in the right way.

We'd been putting this drive off for years. Stopping here turned a chore into something we actually want to do again.

What to Do in the Area

The Hastings River runs below the valley. Fishing is the local sport, and the conditions are good. Port Macquarie is an hour and a half east if you need a beach or a larger town. The drive itself, through the Comboyne Plateau, is worth doing slowly.

Wauchope is the closest town to Amani Farm and has what you need for basics. It also has Timbertown, a heritage village worth an hour if you have children or an interest in the region's timber history.

Practical Notes

Check-in is from 3pm. The cottage is self-contained, so there's no waiting around for anyone to let you in. If you're arriving late after a long drive, that matters.

The Oxley Highway is not the same as the Pacific Highway at night. Drive it in daylight when you can. Wildlife is active in the hours around dawn and dusk, and the road has bends that reward attention.

Booking well in advance is worth it if you have a specific date in mind. The cottage has a single occupancy and the weekends fill ahead of time, especially in autumn and spring.
